It is frustrating for anyone to go into a bar or restaurant with a funky fit out looking great but sounding terrible. Too often architects, interior designers, restaurateurs and developers seem to forget the importance of sound or noise in an environment. Money is spent soothing the eye and the ego and no attention to the acoustic environment.
It is not a solution to simply turn up the background music.
Customers, patrons, guests, covers, bums on seats – whatever you call them – come to a hospitality venue to experience the full environment, the look & feel of a space, the smell, taste and exquisite flavour of the food, the fine quality of service – all those things are vitally important.
A small percentage of people might be eating, drinking, dining alone. However, the great majority of guests are there as a couple or group and communication is vital. The acoustic environment is crucial.
Solving the problem is not too hard – it requires a bit of love, care and attention. In most cases if getting the acoustic solution right is considered it can be accommodated within the project budget.
A fix after the fact can be expensive – demoralising to the designer or developer who might have not considered the acoustics of the environment in the first place. Expensive to all if people just don’t come back.
At Acoustica we are experts in fixing acoustic environments gone wrong – be it a board room or sensitive office where people in the room cannot clearly hear what is being discussed and all the confidential and secretive information can be clearly understood in rooms and corridors outside. We have fixed plenty of restaurants, bars, cafes and hospitality spaces where the acoustic environment does not work, where customers complain or don’t come back – in most cases we can fix that.
Acoustica has developed a broad range of products and systems to make acoustics work in your space. Cheops, Descor, Echosoft, Echosorb, Kliptex, Quietspace and others. However, rather than fixing a problem we much prefer to be involved in the design and commissioning of the space in the first place. To get the solution right, balanced and happy for all. We work across Australia, no job is too small.
We got an urgent call to a restaurant project in the Sydney CBD. The restaurateur and his possie had spent millions on a beautiful fitout – but with little thought to what would happen when the doors opened, the patrons came and the space was filled with noise….
Whilst for a few weeks the restaurant was filled with customers – they were always new faces and people just couldn’t come back as it was just too noisy.
We found that background noise in the restaurant during lunch service at times exceeded 92dB! (90dB is described as eight times as loud as a normal conversation or that the noise equivalent to a passing bus or truck at 3 metres). At the same time, noise on the hectic bus and truck filled CBD street outside was 67dB.
The solution was to install Acoustica’s sound baffles – an architectural product designed to harmonise with the design of the space. A relatively straightforward fix – but it would have been a lot easier had it been incorporated into the original design.
We can’t tell you the name of the chef or the restaurant – but we can suspect that the noise problem may have been affected both their customers and their hats!
